About Pera

Pera Sweet Orange Tree (Citrus sinensis 'Pera')

The Legendary Brazilian Juicing Star & All-Time Heavy Producer

If you want to grow the undisputed king of the South American citrus world, look no further than the Pera Sweet Orange (often called Pêra IAC). As the most widely grown and celebrated citrus variety in Brazil, this powerhouse orange is responsible for producing some of the finest orange juice on the planet.

With its distinctively pear-shaped, slightly elongated fruit and elegant, upright canopy, this exceptionally productive evergreen tree brings an authentic taste of the tropics and a massive annual harvest right to your home garden.

Why the Pera Sweet Orange is a Global Favorite:

  1. World-Class Juicing Variety: Famously packed with an ultra-rich, deeply colorful, high-yield juice that balances natural sugars perfectly with a crisp, refreshing finish.
  2. Virtually Seedless Experience: The firm, fine-textured flesh is remarkably tender and contains very few to no seeds—making it just as wonderful for slicing fresh as it is for pressing.
  3. Outstanding Hanging Quality: The fruit can hold on the tree branches for months after ripening without losing its firm texture or sweet flavor, giving you a completely stress-free, staggered harvest window.
  4. Vigorous & Densely Foliated: Grows into a gorgeous, upright tree with incredibly dense, dark-green glossy foliage that acts as a stunning privacy screen or standalone garden focal point.

Growing in the Ground

  1. Plant in a location that receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  2. Use well-draining, fertile soil with good organic matter.
  3. Water deeply 1–2 times per week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Increase watering during hot, dry weather.
  4. Apply a balanced citrus fertilizer during spring and summer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Prune lightly to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain good air circulation.
  6. Protect young trees from frost and extreme cold.

Growing in a Pot

  1. Choose a container with adequate drainage holes and use a high-quality, well-draining citrus potting mix.
  2. Place the pot in a bright, sunny location where the plant receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  3. Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of the potting mix feels dry. Avoid over watering or allowing the pot to sit in standing water.
  4. Feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season.
  5. Re-pot every 2–3 years or when the roots become crowded.
  6. In regions with cold winters, move the container to a sheltered, frost-free location when temperatures approach freezing.

General Care Tips

  1. Ensure good air circulation around the plant.
  2. Mulch around in-ground trees to help retain soil moisture, keeping mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.
  3. Regularly inspect for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, and spider mites, and treat promptly if needed.
  4. Remove any dead or diseased branches to encourage healthy growth and fruit production.
