About Newhall Nucellar Navel Orange

Newhall Nucellar Navel Orange Tree (Citrus sinensis 'Newhall Nucellar')

The Early-Season, Deep Crimson-Orange Patio Champion

If you want to harvest big, beautiful, rich-tasting navel oranges before winter even officially hits, the Newhall Nucellar Navel Orange is the ultimate choice. Arising as an elite, improved limb mutation of the classic Washington Navel in California, the "Nucellar" selection is a grower favorite because it yields early-maturing, seedless fruits boasting a remarkably deep, striking reddish-orange rind color that stands out beautifully in any garden.

Because Newhall Nucellar trees are naturally compact and less aggressive growers than traditional citrus, they are arguably the absolute best premium orange variety for a life on sunny patios and small backyard spaces.

Why the Newhall Nucellar (New cellar) is a Must-Have:

  1. Striking Crimson-Orange Rind: Produces beautiful oval-shaped fruits with an incredibly intense, deep reddish-orange skin that looks spectacular hanging from the branch.
  2. The Ultimate Early-Season Harvest: Ripens up to 3 to 4 weeks earlier than a regular Washington Navel, letting you pick sweet, tree-fresh fruit from November through January.
  3. Perfectly Sweet & Seedless: Offers a sweet, traditional navel orange flavor profile with firm, low-acid flesh that is 100% seedless and extraordinarily easy to peel.
  4. Naturally Dwarf & Patio-Friendly: Boasts a compact, densely leafed growth habit with gorgeous dark green foliage, making it the premier choice for container gardening and small yards.

Growing in the Ground

  1. Plant in a location that receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  2. Use well-draining, fertile soil with good organic matter.
  3. Water deeply 1–2 times per week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Increase watering during hot, dry weather.
  4. Apply a balanced citrus fertilizer during spring and summer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Prune lightly to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain good air circulation.
  6. Protect young trees from frost and extreme cold.

Growing in a Pot

  1. Choose a container with adequate drainage holes and use a high-quality, well-draining citrus potting mix.
  2. Place the pot in a bright, sunny location where the plant receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  3. Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of the potting mix feels dry. Avoid over watering or allowing the pot to sit in standing water.
  4. Feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season.
  5. Re-pot every 2–3 years or when the roots become crowded.
  6. In regions with cold winters, move the container to a sheltered, frost-free location when temperatures approach freezing.

General Care Tips

  1. Ensure good air circulation around the plant.
  2. Mulch around in-ground trees to help retain soil moisture, keeping mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.
  3. Regularly inspect for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, and spider mites, and treat promptly if needed.
  4. Remove any dead or diseased branches to encourage healthy growth and fruit production.
