The First 90 Days: How to Unbox, Acclimatize & Pot a Grafted Fruit Sapling Without Transplant Shock
- Rest newly delivered saplings in bright filtered shade for 72–96 hours before full sun exposure.
- Always keep the swollen graft union 10–15 cm above the soil line to prevent collar rot and scion rooting.
- Use a breathable, non-compacting mix (50% loam, 25% vermicompost, 20% coarse river sand, 5% neem cake).
- Never apply chemical Urea or DAP during the first 45 days after potting.
1. Day 1–4: Transit Recovery & Stomatal Re-hydration
During courier transit, saplings experience darkness and root-zone vibration. Immediately after unboxing, remove the outer corrugated sleeve, stand the grow bag upright in a shaded veranda or under a 50% shade net, and irrigate slowly with 300–400 ml of plain water. Mist the leaves once in the morning. Keep the sapling in bright, indirect light for 3 to 4 days before introducing morning sunlight.
2. Preparing the Ideal Porous Potting Medium
Fruit trees—especially citrus and mango—require high root-zone oxygen. Heavy clay soils suffocate feeder roots and invite Phytophthora root rot. Prepare a mixture of:
- 50% sun-dried garden loam (topsoil)
- 25% fully decomposed cow dung manure or vermicompost
- 20% washed coarse river sand or perlite for drainage
- 5% neem cake powder (100 g) + 20 g Trichoderma viride bio-fungicide
3. Protecting the Graft Union & Removing Rootstock Suckers
Locate the graft union (the diagonal scar or polythene tape 15–25 cm above the soil). When transplanting into a 14–18 inch pot or ground pit, plant at the exact nursery soil level. Any shoot sprouting below the graft line belongs to the rootstock—pinch it off immediately so it does not steal sap from the grafted variety.
4. The 45-Day Fertilizer Rule
Newly transplanted white root tips are sensitive to osmotic salt burn. Rely solely on the vermicompost in your potting mix for the first 45 days. Begin light organic top-dressing only after you see a fresh flush of bronze or light-green leaves.
