About Hamlin
Hamlin Sweet Orange Tree (Citrus sinensis 'Hamlin')
The Premiere Cold-Hardy Early Winter Juicer
If you want a highly productive citrus tree that kicks off the winter season with bursts of sugary sweetness, the Hamlin Sweet Orange Tree is an absolute standout. Originating as a chance seedling in Florida in 1879, it has stood the test of time as one of the world's most widely grown early-season sweet oranges.
Remarkably cold-tolerant compared to other citrus varieties, this beautiful evergreen tree produces massive, highly dependable crops of round, thin-skinned fruit right when you need a bright pop of winter flavor.
Why the Hamlin Sweet Orange is a Top-Tier Choice:
- Ultimate Juicing Champion: Packed with an exceptional volume of rich, golden-colored, low-acid juice that makes it a world-renowned variety for premium morning squeezing.
- Virtually Seedless & Tender: Offers a smooth, sweet, and mild flavor profile with very few to no seeds, making it just as wonderful for fresh hand-eating as it is for juicing.
- Superior Cold-Hardiness: Highly valued for its improved frost tolerance, reliably managing temperatures down into the 20°–25°F range once established.
- Early Winter Harvest: While other orange varieties keep you waiting until late spring or summer, the Hamlin is fully mature and ready to harvest between October and January.

Growing in the Ground
- Plant in a location that receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
- Use well-draining, fertile soil with good organic matter.
- Water deeply 1–2 times per week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Increase watering during hot, dry weather.
- Apply a balanced citrus fertilizer during spring and summer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Prune lightly to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain good air circulation.
- Protect young trees from frost and extreme cold.
Growing in a Pot
- Choose a container with adequate drainage holes and use a high-quality, well-draining citrus potting mix.
- Place the pot in a bright, sunny location where the plant receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of the potting mix feels dry. Avoid over watering or allowing the pot to sit in standing water.
- Feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season.
- Re-pot every 2–3 years or when the roots become crowded.
- In regions with cold winters, move the container to a sheltered, frost-free location when temperatures approach freezing.
General Care Tips
- Ensure good air circulation around the plant.
- Mulch around in-ground trees to help retain soil moisture, keeping mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.
- Regularly inspect for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, and spider mites, and treat promptly if needed.
- Remove any dead or diseased branches to encourage healthy growth and fruit production.
