About Sps Pusha Mango Tree
The Pusa Shreshth (often written as Pusa Shrestha) is one of the most celebrated premium modern hybrid mango varieties developed by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), Pusa, New Delhi.
It was carefully bred by crossing the heavily yielding Indian favorite Amrapali with the vibrant exotic variety Sensation. The goal was to create a mango that combines the elite sweet taste of traditional Indian mangoes with a stunning colorful look and excellent commercial traits.
Why It's Highly Demanded:
- Striking Bicolor Peel: The medium-sized (230–250g), elongated fruit develops a beautiful, glowing red peel on a smooth golden-yellow background. It is incredibly eye-catching hanging in the garden or placed on a dining table.
- True Regular Bearer: It completely breaks the frustrating "alternate bearing" habit of older varieties (which only fruit every other year). The Pusa Shreshth reliably yields a heavy, uniform crop every single summer.
- Rich, Fiberless Pulp: The deep orange flesh is firm, buttery, and entirely fiber-free. It features an excellent balance of sweetness and mild acidity with a high Total Soluble Solids (TSS) value of 20.33° Brix.
- Terrific Shelf Life: Unlike delicate heirloom mangoes that bruise or overripen within 48 hours, Pusa Shreshth boasts a resilient post-harvest shelf life of 7 to 8 days at room temperature.
- Compact & Container Friendly: Because it displays semi-vigorous, controlled growth, it is perfectly suited for closer high-density planting in gardens or for maintaining as a compact fruiting tree in large terrace containers.
Plant Care & Specifications
| Feature | Details |
| Sunlight | Absolute Full Sun (Requires 7 to 8+ hours of direct daily light to color the skin and build natural sugars) |
| Watering | Moderate; water deeply when the top 2 inches dry out. Halt all watering from November to January to force spring flower blooms. |
| Soil Requirements | Thrives in loose, deep, sharply well-draining loamy or sandy-alluvial soil; hates soggy ground |
| Fruiting Window | Mid-to-Late Summer (Grafted saplings start establishing flowers and bearing fruit within 3 to 4 years) |
| Mature Size | 10–12 ft in-ground; easily maintained at a tight, bushy 5–6 ft in large containers with annual pruning |
Grower's Tip: To unlock that signature crimson-red color on the fruit's skin, the mangoes need direct exposure to the sun. If your tree gets incredibly leafy by May, gently prune away a few fan leaves around the fruit clusters so the sunlight can directly kiss the shoulders of the ripening mangoes!

The Master Alphonso Care Blueprint: Container and Ground
Cultivating the legendary Alphonso Mango is incredibly rewarding, but it has one specific quirk: it is a highly sensitive, premium heirloom. Unlike modern hybrids, the Alphonso demands strict attention to its seasonal cycle—particularly a dry winter rest—to trigger flowering.
Follow this clear blueprint to manage your grafted Alphonso tree successfully in both setups.
Soil and Foundations
- 🪴 In the Container: Use a large 20-gallon pot (minimum 18-to-20-inch diameter) with multiple drainage holes. Create an ultra-loose potting mix using 40% garden loam, 30% coarse river sand or perlite, and 30% organic compost (like vermicompost). Alphonso roots will rot quickly if water stands stagnant.
- 🌱 In the Ground: Dig a wide planting hole measuring 2ft x 2ft x 2ft. Mix your native soil 50/50 with well-rotted organic manure, compost, and a handful of bone meal. Choose the highest point in your garden; if you have heavy clay soil, build a raised mound to ensure water drains away rapidly from the trunk. Space multiple trees 15–20 feet apart.
Watering: The Critical Dry Rest
Managing water is the absolute secret to getting Alphonso fruit.
- 🪴 In the Container: Pots dry out quickly in summer sun. Water deeply whenever the top 2 inches of soil feel completely dry, soaking until water runs out the bottom.
- 🌱 In the Ground: Once established, water deeply once a week during dry summer spells.
- ⚠️ The Alphonso Golden Rule (Both): Completely halt all watering from November to January. This strict dry period mimics the dry coastal winter of Western India. It stresses the tree just enough to stop it from pushing out green leaves, forcing it to load its branches with flower buds instead. Resume watering only when you see flower panicles emerging in late winter.
The Seasonal Feeding and Management Lifecycle
1.The Bloom and Fruit-Set Feed:Late Winter (Feb - Mar).
2.The Post-Harvest Recharge:Monsoon (Jun - Jul).
3.The Winter Prep:Autumn (Oct - Nov).
Pruning and Graft Protection
The Graft Line Check: For both setups, routinely inspect the lowest 6 inches of the trunk. Find the diagonal graft joint. Snap off any wild shoots growing below this line immediately. If left alone, the wild rootstock will aggressively choke out the sweet Alphonso canopy.
- 🪴 Container Pruning: Keep your Alphonso maintained at a manageable 6–8 feet. Every year immediately after the summer harvest, trim the tips of the main branches to encourage a bushy, dense dome shape. Thin out the center of the tree so air can circulate and sunlight can reach the inner branches.
- 🌱 Ground Pruning: Allow the tree to establish its majestic canopy. Focus your pruning strictly on structural health: cut away dead or diseased wood, remove branches that cross or rub together, and clear out the lower 3 feet of the trunk to keep pests from easily climbing into the tree.
