About PAU Kinnow 1

PAU Kinnow 1 Mandarin Tree (Citrus reticulata 'PAU Kinnow 1')

The Low-Seeded, High-Yield Next Generation Mandarin

If you want the incredible sweetness and high juice volume of a classic Kinnow mandarin but without the annoyance of spitting out dozens of seeds, the PAU Kinnow 1 Mandarin (often written as PAU K1) is an absolute game-changer. Developed through advanced mutation breeding by the scientists at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), this elite variety solves the biggest consumer complaint about traditional Kinnows while preserving everything that made them famous.

With its compact, dense canopy of glossy dark green leaves, intense fragrance, and highly prolific nature, this premium citrus variety is the perfect upgrade for commercial groves, high-density farmhouses, and sunny home gardens.

Why the PAU Kinnow 1 is a Premier Choice:

  1. Remarkably Low Seed Count: While a traditional Kinnow mandarin can pack anywhere from 15 to 30 seeds per fruit, the PAU Kinnow 1 drastically reduces this to a consumer-friendly average of just 3 seeds per fruit.
  2. The Ultimate Juicing Master: Retains the world-class, deep-orange juice content that Kinnows are legendary for. The juice features a robust, deeply satisfying sugar-to-acid balance.
  3. Massive Yield Potential: Retains the ultra-prolific, vigorous cropping genetics of its parent variety, giving you heavy, branches-bending clusters of uniform, bright orange fruit.
  4. Exceptional Climate Adaptability: Specifically bred and refined to excel in subtropical environments, showing fantastic heat resilience and thriving through the fluctuating seasons of Northern, Central, and Western India.

Growing in the Ground

  1. Plant in a location that receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  2. Use well-draining, fertile soil with good organic matter.
  3. Water deeply 1–2 times per week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Increase watering during hot, dry weather.
  4. Apply a balanced citrus fertilizer during spring and summer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Prune lightly to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain good air circulation.
  6. Protect young trees from frost and extreme cold.

Growing in a Pot

  1. Choose a container with adequate drainage holes and use a high-quality, well-draining citrus potting mix.
  2. Place the pot in a bright, sunny location where the plant receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  3. Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of the potting mix feels dry. Avoid over watering or allowing the pot to sit in standing water.
  4. Feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season.
  5. Re-pot every 2–3 years or when the roots become crowded.
  6. In regions with cold winters, move the container to a sheltered, frost-free location when temperatures approach freezing.

General Care Tips

  1. Ensure good air circulation around the plant.
  2. Mulch around in-ground trees to help retain soil moisture, keeping mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.
  3. Regularly inspect for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, and spider mites, and treat promptly if needed.
  4. Remove any dead or diseased branches to encourage healthy growth and fruit production.
