About Kinnow Carrijoo
Kinnow Mandarin on Carrizo Citrange Rootstock
The Scientific Gold Standard for Disease-Free, High-Quality Mandarins
(Note: "Kinnu Carrijoo" refers to the world-famous Kinnow Mandarin expertly grafted onto Carrizo Citrange rootstock—a high-performance combination highly recommended by agricultural research universities for elite citrus production.)
Givaudan Citrus Variety Collection at UCR - UC Riverside
If you are looking for a citrus plant that combines the intense, rich sweetness of the legendary Kinnow Mandarin with the top-tier disease protection of Carrizo rootstock, this is the ultimate combination. While traditional Kinnow trees are often grafted onto local, wild rootstocks (like Jatti Khatti or Rough Lemon) which can be vulnerable to viruses, the Carrizo Citrange rootstock acts like an armored shield.
This scientific pairing produces a highly vigorous, beautifully upright tree that yields premium, heavily clustered mandarins with vastly superior juice quality and excellent long-term tree health.
Why the Kinnow on Carrizo Rootstock is Superior:
- Elite Virus & Root Rot Immunity: Carrizo rootstock provides outstanding, proven resistance to the devastating Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV), Phytophthora root rot, and harmful soil nematodes that easily kill standard citrus trees.
- Enhanced Fruit Quality & Flavor: In comparison to basic rootstocks, Carrizo is scientifically proven to improve the overall solids, natural sugars, and aromatic oil concentration in the mandarin juice, giving you a vastly richer taste.
- Deep, Drought-Resilient Roots: Naturally develops a deeper, stronger root system (delving 50–60 cm deep) that anchors the tree securely and efficiently mines sandy or well-drained soils for nutrients and water.
- The Ultimate Juicing Mandarin: Yields heavy, glossy, deep-orange fruits bursting with an incredibly rich, high-volume juice that perfectly balances intense sweetness with a refreshing tangy finish.
Plant Care & Specifications
| FeatureDetails | |
| Sunlight | Full Sun (Requires 6 to 8 hours of intense, direct sunlight daily to build sugars) |
| Watering | Moderate; loves a deep, thorough soaking once the top 2 inches of soil feel dry |
| Soil Requirements | Absolutely thrives in sandy, loose, and highly well-draining soils where its deep roots can breathe |
| Hardiness | Highly heat tolerant and shows great cold-resistance down into the mid-20s (°F) |
| Harvest Window | Mid-to-late winter (January to March); fruit holds exceptionally well on the branch |
Grower's Tip: Because Carrizo is a deep-rooting rootstock, it actively dislikes heavy, compacted clay soils that trap stagnant water at the bottom. If you are planting in a pot or heavy garden soil, always mix in plenty of coarse sand and organic compost to ensure perfect drainage!

Growing in the Ground
- Plant in a location that receives 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
- Use well-draining, fertile soil with good organic matter.
- Water deeply 1–2 times per week, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering. Increase watering during hot, dry weather.
- Apply a balanced citrus fertilizer during spring and summer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Prune lightly to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to maintain good air circulation.
- Protect young trees from frost and extreme cold.
Growing in a Pot
- Choose a container with adequate drainage holes and use a high-quality, well-draining citrus potting mix.
- Place the pot in a bright, sunny location where the plant receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) of the potting mix feels dry. Avoid over watering or allowing the pot to sit in standing water.
- Feed with a citrus-specific fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the active growing season.
- Re-pot every 2–3 years or when the roots become crowded.
- In regions with cold winters, move the container to a sheltered, frost-free location when temperatures approach freezing.
General Care Tips
- Ensure good air circulation around the plant.
- Mulch around in-ground trees to help retain soil moisture, keeping mulch a few centimeters away from the trunk.
- Regularly inspect for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, and spider mites, and treat promptly if needed.
- Remove any dead or diseased branches to encourage healthy growth and fruit production.
