About Alphonso Mango Tree

Alphonso Mango Tree (Mangifera indica 'Alphonso')

The Uncontested "King of Mangoes"

If you want to grow the most famous, globally coveted luxury mango in existence, the Alphonso Mango (locally known as Hapus) is the ultimate crown jewel for your collection. Originating along the sun-drenched, volcanic coastal soils of Ratnagiri and Devgad in Maharashtra, India, this legendary heirloom variety is internationally celebrated for its elite quality, intoxicating aroma, and unmatched richness.

The tree develops a magnificent, vigorous, and stately canopy with thick, dark-emerald leaves. It is a premium summer classic that transforms any spacious backyard garden or large sunny terrace into a tropical paradise.

Why the Alphonso Mango is Legendary:

  1. An Unparalleled Sensory Experience: When fully ripe, the skin turns a gorgeous golden-yellow. Inside, the deep saffron-orange pulp fills the entire room with an incredibly intense, sweet, and floral perfume that no other mango can match.
  2. Melt-in-Your-Mouth Texture: The flesh is extraordinarily smooth, rich, and creamy, with absolutely zero stringy fiber. It is the gold standard for fresh slicing, premium mango purees, and gourmet desserts.
  3. A Rich, Complex Flavor Profile: Offers a perfectly balanced, multi-layered taste—deeply honey-sweet with a sophisticated, subtle hint of citrusy tang that lingers beautifully on the palate.
  4. Excellent Post-Harvest Shelf Life: Alphonso mangoes possess a naturally firm skin that allows the fruit to stay perfectly fresh for days after picking, making it easy to store and share your premium harvest.
  5. Highly Adaptable via Grafting: While wild trees grow massive, our professionally grafted trees remain beautifully controlled, allowing them to adapt seamlessly to spacious garden beds or regular pruning in large pots.

Plant Care and Specifications

FeatureDetails
SunlightAbsolute Full Sun (Demands 6 to 8+ hours of hot, direct daily light to properly develop its intense sugars)
WateringModerate; water deeply when the top 2 inches dry out. Must be kept on a strict dry spell during early winter.
Soil RequirementsDemands loose, rich, sharply well-draining sandy loam or laterite soil; highly sensitive to wet feet
Harvest WindowMid-Summer (Typically April to June); one of the earliest and most anticipated premium harvests
Mature Size15–20 ft in-ground; can be maintained at a manageable 6–8 ft in large terrace containers with regular pruning
Grower's Tip: Alphonso is highly sensitive to excessive humidity and wet soil during the winter months. To trigger a massive burst of spring flowers instead of wild green leaves, completely stop all watering and fertilizers from November through January. This brief dry resting period mimics its native coastal habitat and is the ultimate secret to a heavy summer crop!

What You Will Receive:

Alphonso trees grown from seeds take 8 to 10 years to produce fruit and rarely replicate the elite quality of the parent tree. Our Alphonso Mango plants are expertly grafted onto premium, disease-resistant rootstocks, skipping the lengthy juvenile phase entirely so you can experience your first fragrant flower panicles in just 2 to 3 years. Securely protected in our custom-engineered, breathable packaging, your live tree will arrive healthy, well-rooted, and ready to rule your garden.

The Master Alphonso Care Blueprint: Container and Ground

Cultivating the legendary Alphonso Mango is incredibly rewarding, but it has one specific quirk: it is a highly sensitive, premium heirloom. Unlike modern hybrids, the Alphonso demands strict attention to its seasonal cycle—particularly a dry winter rest—to trigger flowering.

Follow this clear blueprint to manage your grafted Alphonso tree successfully in both setups.

Soil and Foundations

  1. 🪴 In the Container: Use a large 20-gallon pot (minimum 18-to-20-inch diameter) with multiple drainage holes. Create an ultra-loose potting mix using 40% garden loam, 30% coarse river sand or perlite, and 30% organic compost (like vermicompost). Alphonso roots will rot quickly if water stands stagnant.
  2. 🌱 In the Ground: Dig a wide planting hole measuring 2ft x 2ft x 2ft. Mix your native soil 50/50 with well-rotted organic manure, compost, and a handful of bone meal. Choose the highest point in your garden; if you have heavy clay soil, build a raised mound to ensure water drains away rapidly from the trunk. Space multiple trees 15–20 feet apart.

Watering: The Critical Dry Rest

Managing water is the absolute secret to getting Alphonso fruit.

  1. 🪴 In the Container: Pots dry out quickly in summer sun. Water deeply whenever the top 2 inches of soil feel completely dry, soaking until water runs out the bottom.
  2. 🌱 In the Ground: Once established, water deeply once a week during dry summer spells.
  3. ⚠️ The Alphonso Golden Rule (Both): Completely halt all watering from November to January. This strict dry period mimics the dry coastal winter of Western India. It stresses the tree just enough to stop it from pushing out green leaves, forcing it to load its branches with flower buds instead. Resume watering only when you see flower panicles emerging in late winter.

The Seasonal Feeding and Management Lifecycle

1.The Bloom and Fruit-Set Feed:Late Winter (Feb - Mar).

2.The Post-Harvest Recharge:Monsoon (Jun - Jul).

3.The Winter Prep:Autumn (Oct - Nov).

Pruning and Graft Protection

The Graft Line Check: For both setups, routinely inspect the lowest 6 inches of the trunk. Find the diagonal graft joint. Snap off any wild shoots growing below this line immediately. If left alone, the wild rootstock will aggressively choke out the sweet Alphonso canopy.
  1. 🪴 Container Pruning: Keep your Alphonso maintained at a manageable 6–8 feet. Every year immediately after the summer harvest, trim the tips of the main branches to encourage a bushy, dense dome shape. Thin out the center of the tree so air can circulate and sunlight can reach the inner branches.
  2. 🌱 Ground Pruning: Allow the tree to establish its majestic canopy. Focus your pruning strictly on structural health: cut away dead or diseased wood, remove branches that cross or rub together, and clear out the lower 3 feet of the trunk to keep pests from easily climbing into the tree.
